Among the common issues in web hosting is when you are unable to send e-mail using your favorite email client. What is Email Client anyway? According to Wikipedia -- An email client, email reader, or more formally mail user agent (MUA), is a computer program used to manage a user's email.
Popular email clients includes Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird and Mac OS X Email.
Here's some of the tips that you might want to check before calling your web hosting provider:
1. Make sure that all your information are setup correctly. This includes: POP3, SMTP, Email Address and Password.
2. Check your email client if you are authenticating the outgoing messages. In most cases, you have to enable this option.
3. If tip number 1 & 2 are properly configured and you're still unable to send with your email client then call your provider and ask for an alternative SMTP port. Most of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) restrict port 25 which is exploited by the spammers. Alternate SMTP port varies and has no standard set of numbers; this could be port 26, 225 or other number.
It is also a best practice if you check the Webmail before making any email client configuration. This is one way to isolate the issue and see if your mail server is really working properly or not.
Most hosting provider has Webmail (Example: http://www.yourdomain.com/webmail) where you can send and receive messages. Do you might want to access this first using your username and password and try sending and receiving some emails. If everything works from the webmail then follow above tips.
